Phoenix Zoo

455 N Galvin Pkwy, Phoenix, AZ 85008
The Phoenix Zoo, set in Papago Park, is the largest privately owned nonprofit zoo in the United States, caring for more than 3,000 animals across nearly 400 species. Opened in 1962 by Robert Maytag, the 125-acre grounds are organized into themed trails, including the Arizona Trail's Southwest flora and fauna, the Africa Trail, the Tropics Trail, and a Children's Trail with a petting zoo. Family favorites include the Giraffe Encounter, Stingray Bay, camel rides, a Safari Train, and a lakeside carousel, and the Zoo is the only AZA-accredited zoo in the Valley, with a long conservation record including its role in saving the Arabian oryx from extinction. It's an easy stop alongside the Desert Botanical Garden, also located in Papago Park.
